Mega Man X4 Timeline: Where the War Actually Begins
The war in Mega Man X4 does not begin with rebellion, but with a gradual breakdown of trust, long before the conflict becomes visible.
Mega Man X4 is often remembered as a straightforward conflict: Repliforce rebels, the Maverick Hunters respond, and war follows. However, when looking at the timeline more closely, the starting point of that war does not lie in the moment Repliforce declares independence, but appears much earlier.
It begins at the point where the way both sides perceive each other starts to change.
Before Sky Lagoon
Before the Sky Lagoon incident, Repliforce is not an enemy. They operate as a Reploid military force alongside the Maverick Hunters, and there is no clear sign of an upcoming conflict.
On the surface, the situation remains stable. However, even at this stage, a critical shift begins to take place, not through action, but through possibility.
Sigma approaches General. He does not attack, does not force anything, and does not present a concrete plan. Instead, he introduces a question: what if the Maverick Hunters themselves become a threat one day.
General rejects the idea, and nothing changes immediately. But from that point on, the way Repliforce could view the Hunters is no longer exactly the same. There is still no war, but a different interpretation has now become possible.

Sky Lagoon
The Sky Lagoon disaster follows soon after. A floating city is destroyed and crashes to the ground, causing massive damage. The real culprit is Magma Dragoon, but this is unknown at the time.
What can be observed is simply that Repliforce is present at the scene.
From here, a gap begins to form between what actually happened and what people believe happened. Subsequent decisions are no longer based purely on truth, but on perception.
This gap between reality and perception is explored further in What Actually Caused the War in Mega Man X4, where it becomes the foundation of the conflict.
Following the incident, the Maverick Hunters request that Repliforce disarm for investigation. From a procedural standpoint, this is reasonable.
However, from Colonel’s perspective, the meaning of that request changes. Disarming under these circumstances implies accepting that Repliforce might be responsible.
He refuses.
This decision is examined in more detail in Colonel – The Decision That Led to War, where its impact on the entire conflict becomes clearer.
And that moment alters the nature of the entire situation. What could have remained an investigation begins to shift into a confrontation of positions.
The Turning Point
Refusing to disarm does not directly create the war, but it removes the last opportunity to keep the situation contained.
When Repliforce declares independence and attempts to establish their own nation, this action is viewed by the Maverick Hunters as rebellion.
At the same time, from Repliforce’s perspective, the demand to disarm represents distrust and control. These two viewpoints no longer align.
Each action taken by one side becomes evidence that confirms the fears of the other.
At this stage, the war no longer begins from a single decision. It emerges from a chain of reactions, where neither side is willing to accept that the other could be right.
The battles that follow, including the confrontations with Colonel and the events involving Iris, are not the cause of the conflict, but the result of a situation that has already passed the point of reversal.

Sigma’s Role
When Sigma appears near the end and takes control of the Final Weapon, it is easy to assume that he is the one responsible for the entire war.
However, when looking back at the timeline, it becomes clear that Sigma does not create the Maverick classification system, does not create Repliforce’s sense of honor, and does not create the distrust between the two sides.
Those elements already exist.
What he does is exploit them and push them further.
Where the War Actually Begins
If the question is where the war in Mega Man X4 actually begins, the answer does not lie in the moment Repliforce declares independence or when the first battle occurs.
It begins earlier, at the point where trust between the two sides starts to weaken.
From there, actions are no longer interpreted in a positive way, and the possibility that the other side could be right is no longer accepted.
From that moment on, every decision leads in the same direction.
